Another "batik" floral, a method of artwork that is endlessly interesting because of its odd unpredictability.
This demo by Linda Baker
should help with understanding the process. It's complicated...A
detailed drawing is gradually masked off in stages, beginning with the
lightest values, and the masking is followed by pouring red, yellow and
blue liquid mixtures over the work surface allowing the paint to mix
naturally. Excess paint is poured off and the piece allowed to dry
completely before the next darkest value is masked off, and the process
is repeated until desired depth of value is achieved. The masking is
then peeled away and any fine details are done with traditional brush
techniques. It's a surprising and quite unpredictable process, a bit
tedious (a painting can take anywhere from 3-6 days), but it has been
terrifically rewarding and has resulted in some of my favorite pieces.
