Having spent a summer in Japan as an exchange student, I liked the cat cartoon popular back then, "Doraemon". Later I learned about the commonly seen "shop cat" (statue) called "Maneki Neko". Neko is the Japanese word for cat, and maneki is "lucky". So many shops have one of these little maneki neko statues at the door or in the shop window. If the right paw is up, it's a general wish for good fortune; left paw up, "may you have more customers". And...the variations on the theme are many, depending on the color of the statue. Cats for romance, for money, for good health...

Maneki neko has also been stylized and modernized over the years by different generations, and this is one of the newer versions.

So, if you're a shop owner, and you're allergic to cats but want a "shop cat", try this little guy!
