A friend and I spent a couple of days playing with watercolor ground and gesso on paper, adding more texture with the use of dried and silk leaves/flower parts, natural cotton fibers, stencils, fake leaves, etc. (removed after leaving their print and before drying).  After allowing the treated paper a full day to dry, painting followed; watercolor ground was used as opaque white here and there.  Fiddly fun.
